Jack Copeland FRS NZ is Professor of Philosophy at the University of Canterbury, New Zealand, where he is Director of the Turing Archive for the History of Computing. Copeland is a leading authority on Alan Turing, the British mathematician whose work in complex mathematics led directly to the invention of the first modern computer and who was also a famous code breaker at Bletchely Park during World War II. Throughout his career Turing also contributed to numerous other fields including mathematical logic, computer programming, mathematical biology, practical engineering and hardware, cognitive science, artificial intelligence and code breaking. Turing has been said to have pioneered the information age.
