Embryonic structures and plantlets were produced from unpollinated ovules of both leeks and onions in whole flower bud culture. Diploid, tetraploid and octoploid leek plants were obtained, but no onion plants were recovered. The response rate obtained was comparable to that found in previous studies on onions using excised ovaries. Addition of 2,4-D to the media was beneficial to partogenesis. The excision of ovules prior to the onset of gynogenesis within the ovary had an adverse effect. Differences in response between genotypes and between individuals were identified.
