Formatted Abstract/Summary
Share House introduces a new performance genre, still nameless, but which may be approached as “instrumental opera” or narrative instrumental music theatre, where the instrumental performers are also acting, with their instrumental music replacing words. Inspired by collaborations with dancers and in the theatre, Topology worked with director Annie Lee to devise a narrative based on alter-ego characters of the five members of Topology. A mixture of pre-existing original music (which was used to generate narrative) and newly composed original music (designed to convey new narrative) was used in conjunction with design, props, lighting and mime to produce fully narrative theatre with a plot. The five musicians inhabit their characters and deliver the play narrative while performing instrumental music. The concept of the plot is five middle-aged housemates living a disheveled existence while trying to convince themselves that their band is on the brink of success. Another aspect of Share House is a fictional band comprising the five characters portrayed in Share House. This band performs a separate show in venues such as pubs and clubs or house concerts, in which they stay in character and mingle with the audience, or introduce songs they play. The music consists mostly of quirky and adventurous arrangements of popular songs. In addition to being a live play and a fictional band gig, Share House is also an album produced by Geoff McGahan, with all original compositions by members of Topology. The music is innovative in its blend of approaches drawn from multiple genres in both stylistic features and creative processes. Share House was nominated for a 2014 Aria Award for Classical Album of the Year. This is a highly innovative project that introduces a new way of performing. The results were successfully conveyed to audiences on the show’s initial Australian tour (with performances in the Anywhere Festival and Brisbane Powerhouse, Cairns, regional Victoria, Newcastle, Sydney and Byron Bay), and received favourable reviews and coverage in The Australian, Sydney Morning Herald, Courier Mail and other regional media, and has been widely broadcast, with special features and live broadcasts on ABC Radio National, ABC Classic FM, 3MBS, Radio Adelaide. The album was Album of the Week on several radio stations including PBS FM, ArtSound FM, and Eastside FM.
