Project name Employee Green Behavior: A Theoretical Framework, Multilevel Review, and Future Research Agenda
Project description
We propose a theory-based conceptual model based on person-environment interaction, and job performance and motivational theories to structure a multilevel review of the employee green behavior (EGB) literature and subsequent research agenda. We differentiate between EGB required by the organization and voluntary EGB performed at the employees’ discretion. The review investigates institutional, organizational, leader, team, and employee-level antecedents and outcomes of EGB, and factors that mediate and moderate these relationships. Our findings suggest that there appear to be disparities between required and voluntary EGBs with regard to the contextual and personal factors they are associated with that warrant a conceptual distinction between the two. The review highlights the paucity of multilevel research examining cross-level effects, and the lack of evidence regarding the outcomes of EGB. We offer suggestions to facilitate the further development of the field, and call for future research to adopt a multilevel perspective, and also to investigate the outcomes of EGB.
