Formatted Abstract/Summary
From Small Things Grow is a Recording with 15 discreet tracks of premiere recordings of new Australian music composed by Erik Griswold, Robert Davidson, Bernard Hoey and John Babbage. The performances are given by 2 of Australia’s leading new music ensembles; Clocked Out Duo and Topology. This collaboration has been ongoing for around 5 years, and culminated in 2 live performances of works from this CD in 2012. The first performance was at the Brisbane Powerhouse Theatre on 6 May 2012, and a subsequent performance in the Conservatorium Theatre as part of Crossbows in mid-May. The performance utilise the specific soundworld of both ensembles. This recording has been played widely on ABC Classical FM and Radio National, 4RRR, 4MBS, PBSFM. Unique to this collaboration is the sound world of Clocked Out which features toy instruments, found objects alongside a performance practice which responds more to iterations in nature, than the measured order of Western Music. This can be most clearly heard in Ecstatic Descent. By contrast the virtuosic playing demanded by Robert Davidson's double concerto Above Ground, written specifically to feature prepared piano and percussion with Topology, challenges the players in different ways. These collaborative projects extend the musicians, the music being made, and the potential audience impact.

Step into the playground of seven spellbound sonic explorers for some serious play

Two of Australia’s most adventurous ensembles, Clocked Out and Topology, have teamed up for a brand-new album, brought to you live in all its ecstatic, quirky, childlike wonder. Toy instruments and found objects create off-kilter grooves accompanied by lush orchestrations of strings, piano and saxophone, alternating with bittersweet inner journeys. This is music that’s more like a landscape than a story – you’ll find yourself transported to different places by John Babbage’s “Dance of the Pleiades”, Erik Griswold’s “Ecstatic Descent”, Robert Davidson’s “Above Ground” and many more. Lose yourself in some of the freshest new music being made today.
