Formatted Abstract/Summary
This exhibition focuses on cultural issues associated with mangroves and urban development. Often maligned as smelly. muddy, mosquito-infested wastelands, mangrove habitats have been relegated to Brisbane's dark, unlit and unwanted parts. Mangroves themselves have been ignored, built over. or used as the dumping grounds for the characteristics of settlement that we disown. As an artist I am interested in mangroves both for their unique environmental value but also because of their cultural and historical role as the 'shadow' in Brisbane's urban psychology. The work continues my study of the relationships between people and environments and is concerned with cultural change, settlement pattern and environmental sustainability.
