Hypersonics is an area of fluid dynamics that is of great interest in engineering. The ability to measure velocities in hypersonic flow is crucial for many hypersonic experiments and research.

Particle Image Velocimetry (PIV) is a method of obtaining velocity data of a flow within a set field of view. PIV allows flow velocities at separate points in the field of view to be identified, producing a whole-view measurement of velocity behaviour in the region.

The University of Queensland is heavily involved in research of hypersonic. One facility that is used at the University of Queensland for researching hypersonic flows is the T4 shock tunnel. Researchers at the University of Queensland have shown interest in adapting a PIV system used for subsonic testing to measure hypersonic flow velocities tests in the T4 shock tunnel.

In this project the feasibility of using a PIV system for tests in the T4 shock tunnel is analysed. A similar facility at the University of Queensland used for hypersonic testing, called the Drummond tunnel, was also analysed as a point of comparison. A hypothetical setup of a PIV system was investigated for both tunnels.

To test the validity of the usability of PIV in the hypersonic facilities, an experiment using the PIV equipment was done in the Drummond tunnel. The experiment was to use the PIV system to measure flow around a model, and compare the results to theoretically expected velocities.
