Formatted abstract
The aerodynamic coefficients for a Discoverer geometry vehicle have been calculated using the computational fluid dynamics package CFD-FASTRAN at velocities between Mach 2.0 and Mach 5.0 for zero incidence flows. The results generated were compared with those predicted by modified Newtonian theory, the USAF Missile DATCOM package and existing experimental data.

This work has been undertaken to provide the basis for the completion of a full database for the Mars Gravity Biosatellite Program’s re-entry vehicle. In the report consideration is given to the underlying physics which govern the flows as well as the influence of choices in the numerical modeling.
