The scope of this Thesis is the investigation into the performance and reliability of the 250 LPM yield valve using experimental analysis. This Thesis has been commissioned by Anglo Coal, which is one of the leading mining companies in Australia.

In a longwall mine, properly functioning roof supports are vital for keeping the integrity of the mine intact and providing a safe and productive environment. Yield valves are connected to the hydraulic legs of the roof supports and play an extremely important role by controlling the performance of the roof support. Therefore, it is important to know how the valve responds to different situations in the longwall environment.

This Thesis will experimentally analyse the performance of the yield valves by determining a pressure-flow rate relationship for the valves. The reliability of the valves will also be inferred from the data spread of the experiments. To conclude the Thesis, an informative judgement will be made about the performance of yield valves relating to the data obtained throughout the Thesis.
