...The authors (of this chapter) concur with the assumptions of Epstein, and later Grawe, with regards to the fundamental nature of attachment, orientation and control, and pain avoidance/pleasure maximisation, as basic psychological needs. The concept of self seems to function on a different level than the basic needs and Grawe (2007) proposed it to be a higher order construct, unique to humans, that results from the integration of the basic needs (see chapter 3). Furthermore, the neural underpinnings of selfesteem remain elusive and are likely to be extremely complex in contrast to those for attachment, orientation and control, and pain avoidance/pleasure maximisation, of which we are beginning to understand some of the neural networks involved, from reflexive actions to much more complex implicit affective processes...
