Formatted abstract
This dissertation presents a folio of compositions that demonstrate the composer’s individual artistic expression, and a critical commentary discussing the influences and developments during the progress of the candidature. During this progress the composer embraces inspirations from a range of traditions and cultures including ancient Chinese philosophy, literature and arts, Tibetan music, Taiwanese indigenous music, and Western art music. Some new methods and approaches responding to these explorations are illustrated in the compositions. In the commentary, the dissertation reviews these fascinations and their impacts on the composer’s aesthetic views and compositional techniques.
