This thesis represents a survey o f the contributions made by the University o f Queensland towards the war effort during the Great War, in relation to both the established history o f the University and the Queensland homefront.

Chapter One outlines the "University community" as it stood prior to the war, providing some analysis towards the relationships which existed between Senate, staff and students, and the interaction between the University and wider community. Chapter Two examines in more detail the ideological basis behind the University's support for the war, taking into consideration the established historiography between John Moses and Gerhard Fischer, and how these relate to the case example o f the University o f Queensland. With this in mind, Chapter Three examines the nature, content and extent to which the University was to support the war effort on the homefront, while Chapter Four is concerned with the issue of direct practical contributions provided by members o f the University to the war effort. Chapter Five deals with the University during the immediate post- war period, and attempts by the University to resume its nominal pre-war roles.
