This analysis is based on examination of hardcopy and electronic documents, the literature on educational objectives, communication with students and staff of the School and analysis of three ECPs.
Student nominated “Exemplar” ECPs were subjected to content analysis using NVivo software. Seventeen themes regarding course objectives and assessment were identified, based around the areas of motivation, educational scaffolding, explicitly stated expectations and student support.
Results indicated that good ECPs and their LOs inform students about the knowledge that they are assumed to have, student and tutor roles and responsibilities (including delimitations on what the course and staff can provide), what is assessed and how it will be assessed.
Recommendations include that LOs have 1) a clear distinction between what is requested of students and what is expected; 2) differentiation between what is to be learned and what will be assessed; and 3) a clear statement regarding how an LO will be assessed. Recommendations about processes which will facilitate these outcomes include 4) regular review of LOs with the aim of gaining staff consensus about ‘essential’ information and level of performance required.
