Shigeru Nakayama, a friend, colleague and mentor to many of us, passed away in Tokyo on 10 May 2014, at the age of 85. Right up until his untimely death, he remained active as an historian of Japanese science, the most internationally known scholar in that field. He regarded Thomas S.
