...It is tempting to see Lee's turn to her Chinese heritage and her adoption of Buddhism as a retreat from the 'criticality' of post-modern appropriation. We might even share the stereotypical notion of a 'New Age' oneness, a putting back together of what has been divided, a search for an elemental unity. Perhaps, indeed, there is something of this in Lee's biography. However, the abstraction of Lee's later work must also be understood as an extension of the underlying principle of the photocopies. They seek to depict something opened up by their split, what is to be seen in the division between copies...
