Formatted Abstract/Summary
Binary data occur frequently in infection management (IM) and quality improvement (QI) work. Two examples are surgical site infections (SSIs) and patient mortality. This chapter provides an introduction to analysis of binary data and proportion data. It focuses on problems that are commonly encountered in the analysis of grouped binary data. These problems include estimation and testing of a single proportion, estimation for a series of proportions, comparison of two proportions, evaluation of more than two proportions, and the analysis of stratified data. The testing method of a single proportion is usually evaluated using a form of P-value under a frequentist approach, likelihood ratio (LR) under a likelihood approach, or Bayes Factor (BF) under a Bayesian approach. The chapter discusses confidence intervals for a series of proportions, stratified proportion data and Mantel-Haenszel, homogeneity and trend tests.
