Formatted abstract
Draglines are one of the largest components of mining equipment typically used in coal mines. They are used to remove overburden material so that underlying coal can be accessed for extraction. The task of controlling such a system is complicated not only due to its size but also the presence of non-linear dynamics in the system.

Previous analyses of draglines have been achieved by numerical and demonstrative methods to model the systems dynamics. There has been one previous experimental method conducted that does not include the effects of a drag rope.

The purpose of this thesis is to provide a new method of modeling draglines by designing and manufacturing an apparatus which can be used for the experimental analysis of a dragline including the dragrope. A model design criteria was developed to ensure that the conditions of chaotic motion determined by Dr. Paul A. Meehan were to be satisfied.
A scaled model dragline was manufactured abiding to the design criteria and the resultant system's performance did satisfy the conditions for chaos.
