Zubin Mehta, Artistic Director for Life of the Israel Philharmonic conducts the Australian World Orchestra, made up of Australian musicians currently working in orchestras all over the world (including the Berlin Philharmonic, the London Symphony Orchestra, Vienna Philharmonic among many others) in 3 performances of two seminal works of maximalist repertoire: Mahler's 1st Symphony coming towards the end of the romantic age with the exulted aim of capturing the totality of life in all of its feeling and intensity, and the Rite of Spring, appearing two decades later, when its innovative rhythmic and harmonic conception combined with the primitivistic choreography of Nijinsky and the Ballet Russe caused outrage at the first performance. This performance is of the symphonic version.
