This thesis makes no pretence to have grappled effectively with the wide field that it has attempted to cover. The political biography of Sir Thomas Mcllwraith is in many ways synonymous with forty year of Queensland political history. I was forced in many instances to do original work on issues, not directly connected with the subject of the thesis, which are not discussed in available secondary material. Thus, the thesis falls between tools. I could not seriously present it as a brief history of the period 1860 – 1900, and as biography it both lacks thoroughness, and tends to obscure the individuality of its subject.

I have tried, however, to collect what appeared to me the crucial issues in which sir Thomas Mccillwraith was intimately involved and tried to analyse and expound his thought on these subjects. That a large amount of subjectivity crept in was inevitable. An attempt was not only to expound it critically and to arrive at some assessment of its value.
