The influence of some physical characteristics of fruit fly traps was investigated over three summer trapping seasons from 1978 to 1980 in southeast Queensland. Fruit flies were found to prefer yellow and yellow-green (peak wavelength 520 - 540 nm) coloured boards over other colours. This was true whether or not male lure was present. However, the addition of attractive colours to McPhail and Steiner traps did not affect the capture rate relative to unpainted traps. The attractiveness of coloured sticky traps diminished as the traps became covered with captured flies. This phenomenon was more marked when male lure was present than when the traps were unbaited, probably due to the larger numbers of flies involved in the former case. The colour preference of the fruit flies changed when spheres were used in place of boards and black spheres were preferred over other colours.

More fruit flies were captured on sticky boards hung vertically within the canopies of fruit trees than on traps hung outside the canopy facing in any direction or on traps hung horizontally. When flat sticky boards of various shapes were exposed, fruit flies were most attracted to compact shapes (squares and circles).

Male lure was found to be repellent to female fruit flies when it was present on sticky traps or in yeast-baited McPhail traps. Male fruit flies of the species groups normally responsive to either methyl eugenol or cuelure seemed to be repelled by the non-attractive lure.

Cuelure was found to be attractive for long periods of time but aged cuelure was more attractive than fresh cuelure. Methyl eugenol declined steadily after the first exposure but a long period of attractiveness could be obtained by exposing a large initial amount of lure.

An investigation was carried out to quantify the proportion of fruit flies lost from Steiner traps and it was found that up to 95% of the attracted flies died outside the trap, particularly when the bait was fresh.
