Abstract/Summary The creation of Facebook has allowed individuals to form and maintain friendships with ease by building social networks and communities over the internet. It has also taken information sharing to a new level, which has been discussed in the literature as being a very important part of communication and relationships. The aim of this study was to examine the effect that information sharing on Facebook has on perception of experiences. Specifically, the aim was to examine the effect that anticipating and receiving validation from Facebook friends affects people‘s enjoyment of their experience. One-hundred and fifteen participants from the University of Queensland participated in the study. Participants were randomly assigned to four conditions; browse only, compose and browse, compose, browse then post, and compose, post then browse. After viewing a video some participants composed a potential Facebook status update which they later posted online. The timing of the post differed across the last two conditions so that some participants were able to receive validation and others were not. It was predicted that people who did not receive likes or comments on their update would report to enjoy the video less than people who did. Contrary to predictions, there was no significant effect of condition on enjoyment. However, the results revealed interesting effects of condition on individuals‘ anticipation of their friends‘ reactions to their post. Possible explanations and limitations, as well as the processes that may occur when sharing information are discussed in this paper.
