During the summer of 2003 / 04, the Foxleigh mine site had experienced some problems in attaining their production schedule. It is the aim of this study to identify areas of production that are not up to Foxleigh’s standards. To accomplish this, various aspects of productivity have been analysed and several solutions for improving productivity stated.      

Productivity is based on the relationship between the inputs and outputs of an operation. Various mining influences can affect the operational productivity, such as the geology and labour characteristics of a site. As part of the Foxleigh analysis, several aspects have been reviewed. These include the equipment parameters, Talpac simulations of cycle times and the blasting performance. To improve productivity, the effects of increasing the equipment size and a change to the loading methodology have been calculated.       

This report concludes that the majority of Foxleigh standards and practices lie at or around the general industry standards. However it has found that the base hourly production for the excavation equipment is too high considering the past-recorded performances. Talpac simulations of actual haulage cycles confirm this result. Apart from this, truck utilisation levels have been found to be too low, and staff turnover rates are a concern.      

As such it is Foxleigh’s interests to alter the production rates to an attainable level. At present levels they are too high and lead to a subsequent failure to reach monthly production targets. Other areas that require further investigation include the implementation of a truck dispatch system to optimise truck and excavator combinations.
