Abstract A competitive environment and private sector participation are essential for the economic utilization of renewable energy. Although the private sector is the driver of most industries, private investors are usually cautious about new technologies, particularly in renewable energy. With focus on the desires and concerns of the private sector, this article addresses the main questions private investors have about the identification and evaluation of renewable energy investment opportunities in Iran. The analysis shows solar energy is the best source for private sector investment. Further, for each investment criteria the more attractive energy sources are also presented as byproducts of the research.
