SUMMARY.

The vapour absorption spectrum of naphthalene and octadeuteronaphthalene have been recorded in the vacuum ultraviolet region. Band positions from 1930A to 1520A have been accurately measured. From an analysis of the Rydberg bands, two Rydberg series have been tentatively assigned. They have quantum defects of 0.88 and 0.94, and converge to a series limit at 65,620 cm-1 (8.13 eV). A strong ת - ת * system has been observed extending from about 61,000 cm-1 to 64,000 cm-1. The ionization potentials of naphthalene and octadeuteronaphthalene are the same within experimental error. The ionization potential from this investigation is compared with results from other techniques.
