This thesis presents the results and conclusions of an initial study into how Australian Archaeology can use remote sensing technology as a data gathering, analysis and storage tool. It examines the current position of remote sensing in Australian archaeology and its possible uses in that field in light of literature and practical based research. A discussion of the literature is provided which documents and details the possible archaeological applications of remote sensing. This discussion also examines the principles behind remote sensing, the current state of remote sensing and what particular archaeological tasks various forms o f remote sensing can be applied to. Results of a practical examination of remote sensing data are also given. Selected examples of black and white aerial photography are used to demonstrate in practice some of the archaeological applications of remote sensing that have been discussed. A recurring theme throughout the thesis is the information potential of remote sensing and the fact that this seems to be ignored and/or unknown by Australian archaeology.
