Follow-up of patients with colorectal cancer after radical surgery has become a traditional component of their care but remains controversial. This follow-up is often resource intense, but the evidence to date for its effectiveness has been lacking. Randomized controlled trials have been conducted to test the effectiveness of follow-up in improving patient outcomes, and a Cochrane systematic review of these trials is in progress. Additional clinical trials of follow-up in colorectal cancer patients are underway, and their results may be included in future updates of the systematic review.
