Slag refining is a promising way for the oxidation removal of B from molten Si Distribution ratios of B between Si and various compositions of CaO-SiO2 based slags have been reported, but they were mostly around 2, and the highest reported value was 5.5 at 1823 K due to the restriction of the balance of oxygen potential and the basicity of the slags. However, by alloying Si with a solvent having positive (repulsive) interaction with boron, the distribution can be raised together with the effect of increasing oxygen partial pressure due to the decrease in Si activity. In the present paper, general slag treatment of Si will be reviewed followed by the introduction to the new concept; combination of slag treatment and solvent refining. As an example, partition ratios of B between SiO2-CaO-24mol%CaF2 slags and Si-Sn alloys at 1673 K will be reported.
