CIMMYT distributes new sets of wheat lines each year as a series of international nurseries. Each series evaluates a set of 200 – 400 lines in a screening trial and a subset of 30 – 50 lines in a yield trial. Both types of trial are distributed worldwide in the same year. Consequently, data analysis of any single cycle of these international nurseries is likely to be confounding the effects of the genotype and genotype-by-time and also between genotype-by-location and genotype-by-location-by-time. The potential benefit of a two-time field trial strategy can be deterministically modelled using variance components. The analysis of data from the first 30 cycles of the Elite Wheat Spring Yield Trials (ESWYT) resulted in precise estimates of variance components that were used to evaluate and compare several possible set-ups of “two-time” line evaluation. The modelling results indicated that a testing strategy that combined CIMMYT’s screening and yield trials produced the highest potential gain/year with a better genetic repeatability and similar acceptance probability than the current one-time testing strategies. This two-time testing strategy is similar to the current practice, except for the oneyear gap between the screening and yield trial. Thus, if adopted this strategy would be cost neutral for both CIMMYT and international collaborators.
