This article outlines one of Queensland’s worst rail disasters; a double tragedy that occurred on the line between Holmes and Murphy’s Creek rail stations in 1913. The derailment of wagons with loss of cattle was the first event, to be followed within hours by the tragic deaths of six men, killed when a support train ploughed into the rear of the breakdown train and crushed the men who were working on wagons at the derailment site. Subsequent Inquiries lead to changes in safety measures.
