Five (5) special needs support groups (SNSGs) were established in Queensland in 1985. There are forty-two (42) SNSGs in 1988. In late 1987 a committee was established to review the operations of SNSGs.
The review involved completion of a descriptive survey and visits by committee members to sixteen (16) SNSGs. This report is the culmination of the survey responses and the visits.
The report is in five parts.
Part One describes the background and philosophy behind the establishment of SNSGs.
Part Two outlines the review procedures.
Part Three summarises the responses to most of the survey questions. Although the summaries are not exhaustive, they represent the full range of responses received for each question.
Part Four outlines some of the developments in SNSG operations as reported by schools personnel and provides a profile of the operation of a typical SNSG as perceived by committee members.
Part Five lists recommendations which should be useful for existing groups and groups about to be established.
