The principal objective of this project was the identification of probable reasons for earth circle site location. Investigation focussed upon archaeological and environmental data, and to a lesser extent, historic sources. Analysis was divided into a region-wide assessment of spatial aspects of location, and site-specific environmental and morphological factors. Existing archaeological and environmental information was collated, interpreted and then supplemented with data derived from field work. Environmental preferences deduced from thematic maps were tested against a phantom control population. On a spatial level, resulting conclusions identify no universal spatial patterns to site location. However, on an individual basis, many sites appear to occupy same-distance spatial relationships with neighbouring circles over a range of distances. Environmental analysis revealed a distinct set of preferences for site location involving soil type, topography, proximity to perennial water and geological boundaries.
