In August 1862, just on 150 years ago, the first three sailing ships associated with the Bishop Quinn migration programme, the Queensland Immigration Society, anchored in Moreton Bay, the port for Brisbane, the capital of the recently declared new colony of Queensland. By the end of the year, five further vessels under Society auspices had arrived and before August 1863, a total of twelve ships carrying thousands of predominantly Irish settlers had berthed. On Monday, 11 August 1862 passengers from the Erin go Bragh were conveyed from St Helena Island where they had been quarantined as a result of serious illness on board, across Moreton Bay to Brisbane Town. A sesquicentenary later, on Saturday 11 August 2012, over three hundred and sixty people (descendants of these Irish migrants and their families) came together...
