Formatted abstract

The purpose of this thesis has been to assess and outline the diverse roles and contributions of 'foreign' (that is non-indigenous) Pacific Islanders. in the region of north-eastern Australia. (consisting the Gulf of Carpentaria, Cape York, and Torres Strait), and eastern New Guinea during the years 1863 to 1878. Chapter one examines Pacific Islanders and the process of colonization. Chapter two analyzes Pacific Islander involvment in the maritime industry, bêche-de-mer and pearl-shell fisheries. Chapter three assesses Pacific Islanders involved in pastoralism and expeditions of exploration. Chapter four examines Pacific Islanders in the London Missionary Society and Methodist missions. Finally, chapter five assesses Pacific Islanders in the process of culture contact and social change of these regions. A brief concluding note will end this chapter.
