Australia is a mineral rich country where iron ore industry ranks as the world’s third largest producer and is undergoing multi-billion dollar expansions, particularly in Western Australia. Dust generation during mining, transport and storage of ore is sometimes unavoidable. This study aims to develop in-vitro cell-based assays for the evaluation of potential toxicity of inhalable iron-ore particles (PM10, particulate matter ≤10 μm) in comparison to more well-studied metal oxide standards in micro- and /or nano-size scales such as TiO2 (<50 nm), CuO (<5 μm and 50 nm), Fe2O3 (< 5 μm and 50 nm), a mixture of FeO and Fe2O3 (< 5 μm) and SiO2 (<10 μm)...
