Formatted abstract

Bougainville Copper Ltd., operates an open cut porphyry copper mine in the Crown Prince Ranges of Bougainville Island, Papua New Guinea (6°S, 155°E). During the period 1972-1984, over 200 million tonnes of mine tailings have been discharged into a shallow coastal bay (uniform soft bottom, depth < 60m) on the Island’s west coast, influencing an area of approximately 10,000 Ha of sea floor. Benthic sampling in 1979, 1981 and 1982 showed that loss of macrobenthic standing crop has occurred as a result of tailings deposition together with reduction of species richness (d), evenness (J) and diversity (H’). However, macrobethic density (mean 161/m2) and biomass (3-7.2 g/m2 wet weight) are naturally low in reference areas geographically isolated from the zone of tailings disposal confirming a trend for depression of these benthic community parameters in low latitudes.
