Restructuring is examined at the level of the firm, selected industries and the economy as a whole. Particular attention is paid to growing disparities in regional development and industrial roles between northern and southern states and the current situation of foreign workers. Concludes that continuing education and worker training will be central to the flexibility required in the German economy and proposes a research agenda within which manufacturing development may be studied.
