This project is a fully searchable relational database containing all stage directions and scene headings from Restoration plays (first tranche,1660-74; to 1700 in second tranche). The database is unique in its content, aims, and scope. As well as recording all stage directions in the plays of the period, so allowing researchers to track and compare stage directions from different theatres, theatre companies, and genres, it uniquely classifies stage directions into specific types. This classification enables wider and more statistically valid comparisons among plays, so allowing more detailed inferences to be drawn about various aspects of the original staging.
The data comprises stage directions and scene headings recorded in the first published editions of Restoration plays. This data is available for inspection via various search methods using keywords and/or specific headings.
