Abstract/Summary Field trips are commonly viewed as an essential component of children’s education and are a regular part of many schools and programs. Despite the fact that field trips can be costly and require extensive organisation on the part of the educators and caretakers, schools invest their resources into field trips based on the belief that field trips do provide additional educational benefits that a regular classroom cannot. To date, however, there has been no research that has strictly compared children’s learning in regular classrooms and children’s learning on a field trip. That is, if children are taught the same, structured curriculum in their regular classroom or on a field trip, would we find differences in children’s learning? To answer this question, 5 and 6 year old children were given a 1-h lesson about the Royal Albatross in their regular classrooms or on a field trip to the Royal Albatross Colony at Taiaroa Head, Dunedin. Children were then interviewed about the educational experience after a brief delay of 1 to 2 days to assess what they learned in these two different contexts.
