Stirred milling is an enabling technology to process low grade finely disseminated ore. Besides size reduction, the mechanochemical effect takes place due to high energies delivered by the mill to the ore. Mechanochemical effect is structural distortion of crystal lattice due to high energy delivered by the mill to the particles. Both size reduction and the mechanochemical effect can enhance downstream hydrometallurgical processes. The benefits to downstream processes may alter the criteria of mill performance evaluation which currently focuses on size reduction only.
