In stepping up to meet the challenges of lower ore grades, larger and deeper pits, detrimental elements, pressures on reduction in energy and water usage and minimizing environmental impact, all while meeting the social license to operate, the mining industry is required to transform its processing capability. The enabling technology for this includes novel processing routes and equipment for which the ability to model performance with confidence is necessary to devise and test the potential new processes. As a research community our contribution is to provide a leadership role in developing and assessing the required tools and technology. The proposed required modelling capabilities and the essential need to integrate individual process units into reliable simulations are addressed.
