Our research program seeks to understand the influence of hydrogen on steels for the hydrogen economy. The present paucity of affordable hydrogen-proof materials poses strong technological and economic barriers to the hydrogen economy. Our research seeks to understand the behaviour of medium-strength-steels. Our research includes : ( i ) understanding the hydrogen influence on steels using the linearly increasing stress test ( LIST) and fatigue tests for electrochemically charged specimens; ( 2 ) evaluating the hydrogen fugacity equivalent to the electrochemical hydrogen charging , using ( i ) electrolytic permeability experiments and ( ii ) thermal desorption spectroscopy ( TDS ) . The approach for each is described. The theoretical underpinnings are explained. The first results are presented and the future research directions explained.
