Densification behaviour of powder metallurgy (PM) aluminium alloys made from blended elemental powders and a pre-alloyed powder were investigated under an atmosphere of nitrogen or a mixture of nitrogen and hydrogen. In contrast to the case under nitrogen alone, little or no shrinkage occurs in the presence of hydrogen, leading to a poor sintered microstructure. The severity of this adverse effect appears to be dependent on the alloy composition. A higher liquid fraction partially mitigates the effect.
