Formatted Abstract/Summary
What is at stake for women in the Pacific Islands if we discuss possible alignment between the women peace and security (WPS) agenda and the normative principals of Responsibility to Protect (R2P). How can these agendas be made relevant in settings where conflict often sparks a hardening of cultural identifications and an associated policing of women's behavior as part of efforts to defend cultural integrity? More particularly, how can an alignment between these two agendas add value to the activity already occurring across the region which aims to uphold women's standing? In this chapter I address these questions as I consider how the WPS and R2P agendas can be collaboratively invoked to constructively address one of the most fundamental sources of women's insecurity in the Pacific Islands: their exposure to extreme gender violence.
