Abstract Ten young offenders participated in a Wilderness type camp experience organised and conducted by the Western Australian Police Force. Data revealed that the participating adolescents and police officers had very similar goals pertaining to the program, citing freedom type goals, physical goals and career goals as most important. Furthermore, both groups wanted to improve their own image and also improve relationships between young people and the police, particularly in terms of interpersonal skills, and suggested that Wilderness type camps would be beneficial in fostering such skills. Levels of attending behavior of the adolescents increased significantly as the camp progressed and the tasks became more challenging. The most challenging activity was the nighttime navigation, while adolescents citcd the evening campfire groups as the most enjoyable activity. All participants reported enjoying the camp and expressed a strong interest in attending further camps. When asked how camps could be improved, the overwhelming response was to make them longer.
