Abstract/Summary Specimens of cast Mg-0.8 at.%Gd, Mg-2.2 at.%Zn and Mg-2.5at.%Al alloys were tested in compression at an initial strain rate of-1.5x10' s~ at room temperature and 180°C. The Mg-Zn alloy, and more so the Mg-Gd alloy, exhibited a largely athermal behaviour, in contrast with the Mg-Al alloy which softened considerably at the higher temperature. The athermal behaviour of the Zn- and Gd-containing alloys can be accounted for by their strong tendency to developing short range order.
