Abstract/Summary Floods through inundated urban environments constitute a hazard to the population and infrastructure. A series of field measurements were performed in an inundated section of the City of Brisbane (Australia) during a major flood in January 2011. Using an acoustic Doppler velocimeter (ADV), detailed velocity and suspended sediment concentration measurements were conducted about the peak of the flood. The results are discussed with a focus on the safety of individuals in floodwaters and the sediment deposition during the flood recession. The force of the floodwaters in Gardens Point Road was deemed unsafe for individual evacuation. A comparison with past laboratory results suggested that previous recommendations could be inappropriate and unsafe in real flood flows.

Le continent australien a reçu des précipitations très importantes sur des étendues considérables durant l’été 2010-2011. Durant la crue du 12-13 janvier 2011, les auteurs ont conduit des mesures de terrain, dans une rue inondée, au centre-ville de la ville de Brisbane. Les mesures de vitesses ont été faites avec un système de vélocimétrie acoustique Doppler (ADV), enregistré à 50 Hz pendant plusieurs heures autour du pic de la crue. Dans cette contribution, on discute en particulier le transport sédimentaire, et la déposition de sédiments en fin de crue, ainsi que les conditions de sécurité pour une évacuation des populations dans les eaux de crues. On montre que certains critères, basés sur des mesures en laboratoire, sont inadéquates.
