INTRODUCTION

The recent finding by Mr. J. T. Woods of beautifully preserved though fragmentary remains of fertile fronds of a species of Equisetites at Brighton, near Sandgate, is of importance from several aspects. Such fertile remains are not common anywhere in the world, and it is rare indeed that one finds material such as this from which the fertile structures can be described in almost as much detail as that of living species ; the find is therefore one of considerable botanical interest. Further, the associated flora, the lithology of the beds and their structure suggest that they are probably of different (younger) age than the nearby Ipswich Series with which they were formerly included. While it is possible that the beds are the equivalent of the Walloon Series or of the Bundamba Series, the flora is insufficient to determine the age with certainty and we therefore apply the name Brighton Beds to the strata, leaving the exact determination of the age until more evidence is available.
