Multimedia services will become the major trend in the 3rd generation of mobile communication system in the 21st century. Multimedia communication means communication through multiple ways of presenting the information. One of the examples is the video conferencing, which combining the transmission of voice and moving image. Different forms of data are needed to transmit in the same channel; as a result the requirement of the data rate and the spectrum-efficient for the system are increased. Unfortunately present mobile communication systems are unable to provide such a requirement, therefore a new standard with a different modulation technique is needed.
This thesis is to present the modulation technique for the mobile multimedia communication. Literature on wideband-CDMA system (one of the proposed standard in the 3rd generation of mobile communication system) is reviewed. Furthermore, the modulation techniques employed in the direct-sequence spread spectrum scheme are covered.
Finally, a simulation model of the CDMA system is presented, analysis of the probability of error against the signal-to-noise ratio was carried out as to determine the efficiency of the CDMA system.
