Abstract/Summary To help create improved approaches for managing abnormal conditions in complex process systems, the authors have developed and used a functional systems framework (FSF) that describes how function arises from the interplay of capabilities associated with plant, procedures and people. The FSF conceptualises capabilities as "the ability to affect the states of the system" which is powerful not only for building the function of the system but also for providing a basis for other important system properties. To date, the FSF has been used to aid the development of integrated processes that focus on hazards associated with people, plant and procedures, so that abnormal conditions can be managed better through design and diagnosis. More is needed, however, in systems where abnormal operations and uncontemplated situations occur. We need new approaches to effectively address such challenges. Recent research has revealed the potential advantages of building resilience as a way to better manage abnormal operations and uncontemplated situations. We discuss resilience as a goal and review recent research. We then revisit the FSF, showing how it can be used as a basis for describing and analysing resilience within complex systems. Finally we describe how resilience properties can be built into a system. The paper uses an industrial case study that illustrates the importance of building resilience and shows how the FSF can be extended to address that issue.
