Formatted abstract

This thesis will attempt to verify the significance of civic architecture for the construction and continuation of collective identity. Research is based upon three case studies that endeavour to support the above statement by outlining examples where the city fabric, or an object in the urban landscape, is considered manifest of a collective identity, and thus targeted for demolition in war or conflict.

This analysis will describe how, through the systematic destruction of identifiable city fabric and tensions pertaining to the selection of particular reconstructions, architecture has the ability to directly influence the collective understanding of self. The relationship between memory, place and architecture, will provide a basis for understanding the importance of design in the memory processes; remembering and forgetting, and confirm the significance of image and experience for their construction. The purpose of this research is to discern whether a clear framework for development can be constructed that can aid reconstruction decisions in disaster situations.
